• Description

Why do some individuals on the autism spectrum engage in behaviors like aggression, self-injury, or property destruction? How can we respond in ways that truly help?

This session takes a practical look at what’s behind challenging behaviors. We will explore predictors of self-injurious behaviours, elopement and property destruction in individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions. The role of emotion regulation difficulties, communication limitations, and physiological anxiety symptoms in the severity of specific behaviors will also be discussed.

This presentation will also review evidence-based intervention targets, including prioritizing emotion regulation skills training and recognizing that physiological anxiety may be particularly important for non-speaking individuals who exhibit aggressive or elopement behaviors.

By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with insights and tools to better support individuals in ways that promote calm, connection, and quality of life.
