Supported Transition and Engagement Programme (STEP)

STEP is a transition support programme for recent special education (SPED) graduates who are waiting for enrolment into government-funded Day Activity Centres (DACs), Sheltered Workshops (SWs) or employment services upon graduation. While waiting for enrolment into these services, SPED graduates can participate in STEP which offers engagement activities  at least twice a week. Activities will include workshops on independent living skills and social outings, most of which will be held at one of the SPED school campuses.

Who Can Apply

STEP is available to recent SPED graduates who meet the following criteria. Applicants should:

  1. Be a Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident regardless of race, language or religion
  2. Have graduated from SPED school within the past five (5) years or less
  3. Not have enrolled in any other government-funded adult disability services
  4. Have the consent of parents/guardians for his/her participation; and the parents/guardians should abide by the conditions of the programme on parental responsibilities
  5. Have a disability, which include physical, sensory, intellectual, autism or a combination of these conditions
  6. Be free from infectious disease; e.g. the individual should not have serious psychotic disorders and/or serious behavioural problems that require him/her to be under close individual supervision or nursing care.

The above criteria are subject to case-by-case evaluation.

What To Do

Getting Started:

  • If a SPED graduate is awaiting enrollment into DACs, SWs, or employment services, a representative from STEP may contact the caregiver to offer participation in the programme.
  • If the caregiver did not receive any call from a STEP representative, they may reach out to the Transition Planning Coordinator (TPC) from their SPED school for enquiries, or contact SG Enable at 1800-8585-885 to find out more.
